This resource is meant to be used by faculty/instructors as they craft their syllabi to include a statement about AI use in their classroom. The example provided can be used for a class as a whole, or it can be used for individual assignments and edited on a case-by-case basis. The purpose of this resource is to incorporate open discussions about ethical and permissible AI use in the classroom and to establish clear expectations and guidelines.

  • Instructions for Use/Implementation

Read the table provided as an example, then use the template to create your own guidelines for assignments or for your class as a whole.  The green section symbolizes a green light, meaning students can use AI tools.  Yellow means “Slow down,” and encourages students to check with their advisor before using AI tools. Lastly, red signals that AI tools are not allowed.

Prep time needed will depend on whether the template is being used for individual assignments (5-15 minutes) or for an entire class (15-45 minutes).  

  • Classroom Time Needed

Classroom time needed will also depend on whether the table is used as part of a course syllabus, and therefore explained and discussed on the first day of class or whether the table will be used for each assignment.  If the table is used for a class as a whole, allow for 10-15 minutes to explain the table, and for 10-15 minutes of discussion with your students.  If the table will be used for individual assignments, you might need the initial 10-30 minutes, and then 5-10 minutes for each subsequent time you are using the table.

Students will be encouraged to critically think about and discuss their use of AI technologies in their assignments.

This tool is not meant to assess students, but rather to provide them with clear guidelines on when to use or stay away from AI tools.
